WHAT THE PRESS IS SAYING ABOUT US
~ Stephen Tanzer's International Wine
Cellar
2010
DUTTON RANCH PINOT NOIR
"Bright cherry-red. Sappy aromas of black cherry, flowers, spices
and orange zest, complemented by a whiff of forest floor. Bright, juicy
and sharply delineated, with harmonious acidity giving the red fruit
flavors an enticing sappy quality. Finishes with fine-grained tannins
and very good length...routinely an excellent value in California pinot...91."
2010
ANGEL CAMP VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Good bright medium red. Subtle perfume of raspberry, rose petal
and brown spices. Silky on entry, then dense, supple and fine-grained
in the middle, with lovely detail and a light touch to the pungent berry
and spice flavors...finishes with very suave tannins and lingering floral
lift...91."
2010
MORELLI LANE VINEYARD ZINFANDEL
"Fresh dark red. Classic zin aromas of cherry, orange peel and
cracked peppercorn. Not hugely ripe or thick but energetic and juicy
owing to lively peppery acidity. Turned slightly candied with aeration
but the finish is fresh and suavely tannic. This should be a flexible
zin for the dinner table: I'd try it with a pepper-encrusted steak...91."
2010
FREESTONE HILL VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Dark red. Deep, dark aromas of black raspberry, black cherry,
baking spices, cocoa powder and licorice; showed higher-pitched mint
and violet notes with extended aeration. Rich and deep but not at all
heavy, with lovely inner-palate lift to the fruit, licorice, spice and
game flavors. Dense, lively with excellent palate presence. Finishes
with suave tannins and noteworthy persistence...92."
2009 EMERALD RIDGE VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Bright dark red. Subtly complex, soil-driven aromas of black raspberry,
flowers and spices. Dense, sweet, concentrated and deep, but with a
light touch to the enticing raspberry and spice flavors. Expands impressively
with air to show an avalanche of darker blackberry and blueberry fruit.
Sappy, sexy wine with suave tannins and excellent length. Offers uncanny
richness and flavor intensity for a pinot with a moderate 13.5% alcohol...93."
2009
FOX DEN VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Bright, saturated red with ruby highlights. Reticent aromas of
blueberry, sassafras and wild herbs, with a light resiny nuance. Supple
and creamy but shapely, with nicely integrated acidity giving shape
to this very young pinot. Sappy, extract-rich flavors of raspberry,
herbs and earthy spices lead to a classically dry and very savory finish.
Conveys a strong impression of soil character that goes well beyond
mere fruitiness...92."
2009
MCDOUGALL VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Good full red. Brooding aromas of raspberry and menthol are joined
by a floral element as the wine opens in the glass. Silky, classically
dry and savory, with a light touch and an impression of almost salty
minerality. More red and less black in fruit character than the Green
Valley examples. Really dusts the palate on the long aftertaste. This
opened beautifully with air, but I'd still wait at least a year or two
to pull the cork...93."

2011
DUTTON RANCH PINOT NOIR
"Dark pinot fruit, spice, plum and soft floral
elements introduce round, velvety and delicious middle weight flavors
that possess an opulent but not heavy mouth feel before culminating
in a lingering, mouth coating and well-balanced finish that is both
clean and dry. I like both the style and the delivery though a bit
more depth would be a big plus. Note that this could easily be enjoyed
now...88 points."
2011
EMERALD RIDGE VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"A ripe, spiccy and pretty mix of plum, cassis and black cherry leads
to impressively rich and voluminous medium-bodied flavors that possess
a very suave and lush mouth feel. There is solid complexity and verve
and about the only nit is a light touch of backend warmth. A generous
and satisfying pinot that could easily be enjoyed almost immediately...89
points."
2011
ANGEL CAMP VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Initially this was quite expressive but with extended aeration the
nose became increasingly restrained with grudging aromas of spice,
plum, violets and dark currants. There is a really lovely mouth feel
to the attractively supple yet nicely delineated middle weight flavors
that possess a lush mouth feel before culminating in a moderately
complex but persistent and well-balanced finish. This is certainly
pretty and if it can add depth it will more than merit my score, which
currently extends the benefit of the doubt...90 points."
2010
FOX DEN VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"A spicy, rpie and cool nose features notes of black cherry, cassis
and kirsch plus a hint of green tea. There is good volume to the velvety
and suave middle weight flavors that possess a hint of warmth on the
otherwise delicious and well-balanced finish. There is good depth
and fine length and this is a wine that could already be enjoyed or
held for further development...89 points."
2010
MCDOUGALL VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"This is more aromatically reserved than its 2010 stable mates, with
a somber nose of ripe plum and various dark berry fruit scents that
exude the same spicy character. There is good volume to the silky-textured
flavors thanks to the notably fine-grained supporting tannins on the
firm, dusty and mouth coating finish that delivers fine length. This
will also need to add a bit f depth but I like the balance and my
score offers the benefit of the doubt that more complexity will emerge
with time...91 points."

2010
RUED VINEYARD CHARDONNAY
"The cold and fog actually helped this Chardonnay, which achieves
a remarkable delicacy and tartness despite the power of its fruit. Really
remarkable for the flood of golden mango, Asian pear and Key lime pie
richness, which is grounded by a firm minerality. Oak influence and
aging on the lees lend the perfect touches of smoky, buttered toast
and zesty creaminess to this dry, polished wine...97 points."
2009
CHERRY RIDGE VINEYARD SYRAH
"Bone dry, acidic and tough in tannins, this also has a deep core
of blackberry fruit, with a lovely coating of oak. Notable for balance
and elegance, it wants some time in the cellar. Drink around 2015...91
points."
2011
CHILENO VALLEY VINEYARD RIESLING
"The chilly 2011 vintage was kind to Dutton-Goldfield's whites,
including this racy, clean offering. This is bone dry and modest in
alcohol, with bracing acidity. Orange zest, peach and lemon flavors
are marked with a distinctive petrol note...92 points & Editors'
Choice."
2010
FREESTONE HILL VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Acidity dominates this wine, giving it a tartnesslike a
squeeze of lime juice. Past that is an enormously rich, dry, vibrant
wine, explosive in raspberries, cherries and ripe, sweet persimmons.
New French oak, with its caramel-like toastiness, is perfectly in keeping
with the wine's volume. It's a bit disjointed now, but give it 3-4 years
in the cellar, and it should come around...91 points & Cellar
Selection."
2010
AZAYA RANCH VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Comprised of ripe raspberry and cherry fruit; sweet, smoky new
oak; and brisk, citrusy acidity; this dry Pinot Noir is fine and elegant.
As for its ageability, all suggestions are to drink it over the next
four years, before the fruit drops out..91 points."
2011
GREEN VALLEY VINEYARD GEWÜRZTRAMINER
"This is technically dry, but rich in sweet flavorlike
a gingerbread cookie. There's also a lot of tangerine and pear fruit.
The acidity is just fine, giving the richness a bracing quality. Try
pairing this with a lightly sugared fruit tart, although it should also
go with a vast range of foods, especially Asian fare...90 points."
2011
SHOP BLOCK PINOT BLANC
"This is a great white wine, especially at this price. With no
oak, it shows pure, clean orange, pineapple, fig and vanilla flavors
that are brightened by crisp acidity. Flashy and showy, yet complex,
it's a beautiful wine to drink now...92 points."
2010
EMERALD RIDGE VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"The vineyard is in the cooler Green Valley, and this Pinot shows
its terroir in the vital acidity that brightens pure, intense cherry,
blueberry and blackberry fruit flavors. It's an elegant wine, but tannic.
Give it 4-6 years in the cellar. Cellar Selection...92 points."
2010
DUTTON RANCH PINOT NOIR
"Very rich and ripe, marked by pure, intense flavors of cherries,
blueberries and spicy cloves. It displays the balanced elegance and
thoughtful winemaking of this winery. Young and juicy now, it should
develop in teh bottle for a year or two...90 points."
2010
MCDOUGALL VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"This successful Pinot Noir from a difficult vintage treads an
exciting line: it contains subtle notes of tomato and beetroot, but
that vegetativeness only adds an earthy complexity to the ripe flavors
of black cherry and plum. It's a fancy, elegant wine to drink now, and
should gain traction over the next 5-6 years...93 points."

~ Wine Spectator
2010
FOX DEN VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Offering a taut mix of sour cherry, red candy, raspberry and red
plum, this is intense and persistent on the finish. The acidity keeps
the flavors lively. Drink now through 2020...91 points."
2011
DUTTON RANCH CHARDONNAY
"Presents a rich mix of white peach, nectarine and white flowers,
both potent and graceful, lingering with a citrusy finish. Drink now
through 2018...90 points & "12 Outstanding Sonoma Chardonnays."
2010
DUTTON RANCH PINOT NOIR
"Pure, ripe, fleshy cranberry, wild berry and subtle floral, sicy
notes give this a range of complexity and subtlety. Drink now through
2018...90 points."
2009 EMERALD RIDGE VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Clean, fresh, vibrant and complex, with zesty wild berry, sour
cherry and raspberry fruit that's lively, spicy and well-structured,
ending with a refreshing aftertaste that offers delicacy and finesse...92
points."
2009 MORELLI LANE VINEYARD ZINFANDEL
"Shows structure and lots of personality, with bold aromas of freshly
cracked pepper and anise that lead to complex yet sleek flavors of boysenberry,
thyme and mineral. Tannins sneak in on the finish...91 points."
2009
STOETZ RIDGE VINEYARD ZINFANDEL
"Sleek and well-focused, with black raspberry and brown spice aromas
and elegant, layered black cherry, toast and caramel notes that finish
with big but ripe tannins. Drink now through 2016...91 points."

RUED VINEYARD CHARDONNAY
"Outstanding Chardonnay, in an elegant, complex style. It is full
bodied,k round, crisp, and very long on the palate, with a wide range
of aromas/flavors, including pear, apple, peach jam, candied lemon,
toast, roasted nut and vanilla...5 stars."
2010
DUTTON RANCH PINOT NOIR
"...remarkably good: an elegant, complex, full bodied Pinot Noir
of excellent quality. It is aromatic, well balanced, and long on the
finish, tasting of plum, violets, cherry, vanilla, raspberry, and spicy
oak. Terrific value!...4+ stars."
2010
FOX DEN VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"...very aromatic and refined in character; a full bodied, supple,
nearly sweet (with ripe fruit) wine, with good balance and a zesty,
persistent finish. It has a wonderful range of aromas/flavors, reminiscent
of black cherry, rosehips, strawberry jam, toast, vanilla, nutmeg, and
violet...5 stars."
2010
DEVIL'S GULCH VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"...unusually "Burgundian" in character; a wine with
supple texture, crisp acidity, fine flavor (plum, rosehips, clove, strawberry,
toast, spicy oak), moderate richness, and a very long finish...4
stars."
2010
MCDOUGALL VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"...a splendid Pinot: full bodied, supple in texture, rich, and
perfectly balanced. It is very long on the palate, with a lightly tannic
finish. In aroma/flavor, it tastes of cherry, blueberry jam, toast,
spicy oak, and kola nut. Very fine quality. Can be aged...5 stars."
2010
FREESTONE HILL VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"...yields consistently top Pinot Noirs, as it did in 2010. It
is both elegant and concentrated in style; a full bodied, supple yet
crisp wine with a very long, very persistent finish, tasting of kola
nut, boysenberry, clove, rosehips, toast, spicy oak, and cranberry...Not
to be missed!...5 stars."

2010
ANGEL CAMP VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"This wine's high-toned red fruit has the effusiveness of young
cru Beaujolais. the smooth, rich texture brings it home to California,
while notes of bright cherry and kelp zero in on Anderson Valley.
Grill salmon steaks and toss some hijiki in with the salad...91
points & A Year's Best Pinot."
2010
MCDOUGALL VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Grown at a far-coast vineyard near Hirsch, at 1,100 feet, this
was made by Dan Goldfield with a long cold soak that built its dark
color and extract while maintaining the gentleness of the tannins.
It's round, full-bodied and rich with perfumed cherry fruit. A generous
pinot noir for prime rib...90 points & A Year's Best Pinot."
2011
DUTTON RANCH PINOT NOIR
"This wine's complexity is immediately apparent, but it comes
off as hard-edged when first poured. With air, the toughness of the
structure begins to rustle toward fruit, still chewy, now relieved
by cool scents of kelp and spice. This should reward with cellar time...90
points & A Year's Best Pinot."
2009
EMERALD RIDGE VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"The color of the wine is raspberry bright, seeming to glow in
the glass. The fruit is tightly compressed in its tannin for now,
feeling both lean and chocolatey soft. Give this a year or two in
bottle to unwind...91 points and Year's Best Pinot Noir."
~ Decanter
2009
FOX DEN VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Striking violet and forest-floor perfume. Youthful and tight
palate with perfectly ripened dark cherry fruit braced by crisp acidity
and a pleasantly earthy edge...18.5 points - 5 stars."
2009
FREESTONE HILL VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Has a cool-climate nose of dark, fleshy fruit, herbs and
mint. The palate is bracingly acidic, yet juicy and generous. Firm
tannins suggest cellaring...18 points - 4 stars."

~ Connoisseur's Guide to California Wine
2011
DUTTON RANCH CHARDONNAY
"Trim and tailored right from the first and showing loads of brisk,
very nervy citrus-tinged fruit in league with wholly complementary oak,
this compact and still-reserved effort is one that simply demands further
age. It makes a bow to Burgundy when it comes to firm balance, and its
complexing highlights of toast, lemon zest and wet stones come through
without interference from overly obvious ripeness. It is not big and
blowsy, but it is deep and long on character all the same, and it speaks
with a clear and very confident voice to its cooler North Coast provenance....91
points."
2011
DUTTON RANCH PINOT NOIR
"It would not surprise us to find this winery among the leading
producers in 2011. The lighter wines of the vintage are going to fit
Dutton Goldfield's preferred style, and this bottling follows right
in step. It is medium-full-bodied, full of bright, lively fruit and
hangs onto its racy impressions from first to last. Its sleek red cherry
focus makes it a fine choice now for service with tangy seafoods, yet
it has enough inner stuffing to grow for a few years yet....89 points."
2010
RUED VINEYARD CHARDONNAY
"In typical winery fashion, this wine relies on restraint and precision
for its charms rather than on outgoing generosity and concentration.
Its focused appley fruit and gentle oak in the nose are repeated in
flavors that, at this writing, are still on the slightly tight side
yet are full of promise. With plenty of length and the balance to serve
with virtually any meal that wants an elegant white, this is a wine
that can be put aside with full confidence in its future...90 points."
2010
FREESTONE HILL VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Subtle touches of fresh herbs and a trim bit of sweet oak are
sympathetic partners to nicely focused, ripe red-cherry fruit first
in the nose and then again in this inviting wine's lengthy flavors.
Fairly full-bodied but never less than lithe and well-balanced, this
engaging youngster is surprisingly easy to taste right now, but its
fruity depth and keep structure tag it as a Pinot that is guaranteed
to gain in polish and beauty for a half-dozen years...92 points."
2010
FOX DEN VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Very much adhering to the winery's predilection for well-balanced
Pinots of measured ripeness, this sleek and structured offering exhibits
fine varietal definition with a firm spine of acidity affording it good
potential for age. It is not an unctuous wine, but it is deep and constant
in fruit, and it cannot but improve if allowed to sit for acouple of
more years...90 points."
2009
MORELLI LANE VINEYARD ZINFANDEL
"Ripe blackberry aromas tinged with bits of dried twig on the one
hand and pert cherries and cranberries on the other make a good if still
somewhat tight beginning, and the wine returns the favor on the palate
where its youthful flavors are long, tasty and refined but have plenty
of room to grow way before they show their best. Medium-full in body
and a bit tannic at this stage, this is one zinfandel that we will put
away for a bit...91 points."

has been more consistently spectacular than Dutton-Goldfield. So it
comes as no surprise that this latest vintage from the Emerald Ridge
Vineyard in the chilly Green Valley district of the Russian River Valley
turned out so well despite challenging growing conditions. What I like
most, however, is the way this wine refutes the conventional wisdom
that ever greater ripeness, and the higher levels of alcohol that result,
is necessary to deliver the full flavor potential of the grape. Not
so. This 13.8 abv Pinot is a flavor blockbuster, exhibiting fresh aromas
of blueberry, raspberry and blackberry with impressive intensity and
persistence. Well balanced, it has the structure to hold well in a proper
celar, but it's drinking beautifuly right now...94 points."
